Meet Brandy Mimms: Choreographer, Teacher, and Founder

Brandy "Unique the Deaf Dancer" Mimms is a DeafBlind professional dancer, choreographer, and K-12 dance educator at the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock, Arkansas. Originally from New Orleans, Brandy is a proud mother of two and a dedicated artist on track to graduate with a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography from Jacksonville University in May 2025, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Her work boldly pushes boundaries and reflects her passion for storytelling and inclusivity in the arts. Brandy's dance journey began in 1999 as a cheerleader at Delgado Community College, where she performed four years and served as team captain for two. Her leadership skills continued to shine as she coached the semi-pro dance team for the UBL Arkansas Warriors from 2008 to 2011. Additionally, she performed with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojan Dance Team from 2017 to 2018. In 2021, she joined the AR Rock Squad and served as captain for one season. From 2022 to 2024, she danced with the Little Rock Lightning Dance Team, serving as team captain for all four years. Alongside her performance achievements, Brandy has been a committed dance instructor for over 20 years, teaching and mentoring youth in her community. Beyond her work as a dancer and educator, Brandy has spoken on several prestigious dance panels, including Dance/USA, the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), and the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). Her contributions to these panels highlight her commitment to advocating for inclusivity, accessibility, and representation in the dance community. Brandy earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2018. Her breakthrough moment came in 2017 when she debuted at the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival, captivating audiences with her innovative choreography. That same year, her piece "Category 4" premiered at the American College Dance Association, earning recognition for its emotional depth and impactful narrative. In 2022, she further showcased her artistry and advocacy by being the runner-up in Deaf's Got Talent. In 2019, Brandy founded the Listen With Your Eyes Dance Troupe, a company dedicated to bridging cultural and communicative divides through the universal language of dance. Under her leadership, the troupe has performed on stages such as the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival, embodying Brandy's mission to inspire understanding and unity through movement. As a passionate educator, mentor, and emerging choreographer, Brandy is a beacon of creativity, resilience, and the transformative power of dance. Her artistry continues to break barriers and redefine the possibilities of expression.

Meet Unique the Deaf Dancer

A professional DeafBlind dancer who's breaking barriers and challenging the status quo in the dance world. Despite being deaf, Unique has always been drawn to the expressive power of dance and has worked hard to hone their skills and technique. With a passion for contemporary dance and a talent for storytelling through movement, Unique has performed at numerous events and festivals, captivating audiences with their grace and creativity. In addition to their dance career, Unique advocates for deaf representation in the arts and works to promote inclusivity and accessibility in the dance community. Join them on this journey to create a more inclusive and equitable world through the power of dance.

Meet  the Founder

Listen With Your Eyes Dance Troupe is a non-profit community dance company dedicated to empowering and educating individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing (DHH), Deaf-Blind (DB), and hearing through the art of dance. Our mission is to break down barriers and ensure that everyone, regardless of their hearing ability, has the opportunity to express themselves through movement. Our team of talented dancers, choreographers, and instructors collaborates to create visually stunning performances that are inclusive and accessible to all. We take a unique approach to dance by incorporating sign language, expressive body movements, and visual storytelling, resulting in an immersive experience for our audiences. Dance has the power to unite people and foster deeper connections. By providing opportunities for members of the DHH and DB communities to participate in dance, we aim to increase visibility, awareness, and understanding. As a community-based dance company, we proudly create a welcoming space where diversity and inclusivity are celebrated. Our mission is to inspire individuals to embrace their differences and recognize the beauty in everyone.
